"It is all right not to know, but it is not all right not to ask/try. A few weeks ago I panicked about changing my field (to another area of biology) and I kept telling myself that I do not know anything in this new path I’m about to take. I find it hard to even understand research papers in this new field but I am starting a PhD in this new field in a few months, without any experience! I started making phone calls and setting up meetings with my new advisor and future lab mates to ask them questions about the techniques I needed to learn before joining them. Then, out of the blue, a friend/mentor asked me, "Have you come down to earth with all the research experience you have now? Of course not! I learnt from people around me, from research papers, from trying and failing, from text books. My point is that research does not stop! There is always a new discovery and new techniques to learn!
